“After meeting Kathy Modene for the first time, I remember thinking how incredibly intelligent, fun-spirited and congenial she was.”
This impression was shared by the many people who came to know her, especially those who discovered she was the “go to” person for answers. Kathy possessed a genuine compassion, caring nature, and commitment to helping others that led her to follow her childhood dream of becoming a nurse. Upon completing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, she began her career in pediatrics at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO. When Deaconess College of Nursing sought to establish a pediatric program, they called upon Kathy’s knowledge, expertise in nursing, and experience to develop the program. Her journey in academia included the Master of Science degree in nursing, which combined her love of pediatrics with a specialty in mental health nursing.
During her tenure at Deaconess College of Nursing, Kathy served as a faculty member, Dean of Academic Affairs, and Coordinator for the Associate Degree in Nursing Program. When Deaconess transitioned into Chamberlain College of Nursing, she became the Director of Institutional and Programmatic Accreditation, where she facilitated the growth of Chamberlain from just the St. Louis campus to more than twenty accredited campuses nationwide, as well as numerous online degree programs.
The influence of Kathy’s life work will long be seen in the success of countless nurses, faculty, staff and other professionals whose lives she touched. She truly exemplified the spirit of Chamberlain CARE. Through the Kathleen Modene Memorial Scholarship, her spirit will live on in our memories and hearts and in nursing education students at Chamberlain University.
